 Behavior Management

In our class, we use a Clip Chart system that has 7 sections. The sections in order from top to bottom are as follows: Outstanding, Role Model, Good Day, Ready to Learn, Think About It, Teacher's Choice, and Parent Contact. Each day, every student will begin in the middle of the chart on Ready to Learn. Through making expected and exceptional choices, a student will be able to earn his/her way up the chart to the Outstanding block. If a student breaks a rule, then he/she will be asked to move down on the clip chart.

In our class, we do POSITIVE interactions. I truly believe in positive reinforcement and am always looking for students that are making not only expected choices, but outstanding choices! I am always trying to "catch" students at their best. :)

What I love most about using the Clip Chart is that a student is always able to improve his/her behavior. Students can move up towards Outstanding from ANY position on the chart. Once a student clips up to Outstanding and remains there all day, a gem will be added to his/her clip! Once a designated number of gems has been collected, students will receive a brand new clothes pin and retire the gem filled clip to our classes "Outstanding Hall of Fame".

Consequences for showing UNEXPECTED behaviors:

If a student shows unexpected classroom behaviors (these behaviors have been discussed as class), the following actions will be taken.

If a student is asked to clip down to Think About It, this means he/she has already received a verbal warning from me and is continuing to demonstrate unexpected behaviors. Upon clipping down to Think About It, the student should use this a time to THINK about what expected behaviors look like in the classroom setting and decide to change his/her behavior.

If a student is asked to clip down again to Teacher's Choice,  this means the student is continuing to make unexpected choices. The student will automatically lose 5 minutes of recess time to have a quick chat with me about his/her behavior. (Students will still lose recess time even if he/she is able to clip up again. Even though the student loses recess time, he/she is still able to reach Outstanding and receive a gem at the end of the day.)

If a student is asked to clip down to the final block Parent Contact, this means the student is diregarding classroom expectations and will lose all of lunch recess. During recess time, the student and I will sit down to write a written reflection of his/her behavior to be brought home and signed by the parent(s). The form should then be returned to me on the next school day. Also, depending on the student behavior, this would also be a time that I would call home and/or refer the student to talk with Dr. Pfaff. (Students will still lose all recess time even if he/she is able to clip up again. Even though the student loses recess time, he/she is still able to reach Outstanding and receive a gem at the end of the day.)

Birthday Treats

Birthdays are a fun and special time! In order to insure every child has a safe and fun time, please make sure all birthday treats are brought to Mrs. Strom's office for approval the afternoon before or morning of your child's birthday celebration. Click HERE to see what snacks are safe for our class. This list is the district's safe snack list that all classrooms must follow.

** Birthday Invitations**

- If your child is sending in birthday invitations, please send in an invitation to the entire class. Students will not be allowed to hand out invitations to only a select group of students. If this is the case, please distribute outside of school.

Thank you!

Reading Calendars

Reading calendars can be found HERE on the Prairie Homepage. It is an expectation, throughout Prairie, that students read 20 minutes every night. The goal is for each child to read 20 minutes, however, I understand that schedules can be busy. Reading calendars will be due on the first Friday of each month, for the previous month. Please make sure to total your child's minutes read before sending his/her reading calendar to school.

Snack & Water Bottle

Second graders eat lunch at 11:40am each day. Therefore, we will have a light and healthy snack around 10:00 each morning. Your child may bring a water bottle to school each day. **IMPORTANT** ALL food that enters our classroom must be from the district approved safe snack list. You can find the link HERE. If your child's snack is not on the safe snack list, he/she will be asked to eat snack in nurse's office or save it for lunch. Please help keep our classroom safe for all students by sending in only snacks from the district approved safe snack list. :)  **
